The last 5 days of Chanukah may have mislead readers into thinking that I only drink sour, fruity beers or stouts. I’m starting to run out of nights for the #8BeersOfChanukah now that we’ve hit night 6, so I did some soul searching in my fridge and came up with Nickel Brook Brewing Company‘s Lost in Orbit Session IPA. Perfect! Now I can dispell the myth that I don’t drink “normal” beers that is circulating on Twitter. Do people still even drink IPAs? I don’t know, but I sure enjoy them.
Weighing in at a respectable 4.5% ABV, Lost in Orbit is a safe bet if you’re playing host to a Chanukah party this year and want to keep your faculties in check, and keep your multiple Uncle Phils straight in your memory. A tall can will only set you back $3.35 at the LCBO, and has a very light 16 IBU. I was expecting a beer with a minimal hop profile with that low IBU, but this one packs a surprisingly flavourful punch thanks to its blend of Amarillo, Citra and Simcoe hops. The can is a little dented from being dropped on the floor this weekend when I cleaned out the fridge and had a few surprises hiding in my beer hoard collection, although I’m fairly sure I recently acquired this can.
What, you thought my attempt at drinking a “normal” beer would result in a lager being consume? Have you been paying attention to this blog at all?
Appearance: Hazy golden yellow colour that reminds me of pineapple juice, with a solid amount of carbonation in the glass. Lingering snow white head.
Aroma: Pineapple, guava, tangerine rind, pine forest and soda crackers.
Taste: Citrusy palate with lots of orange and lime rind, pine needles. A rather velvety mouthfeel from the oats and wheat used in the mash.
Aftertaste: Lingering piney aftertaste.
Food pairing: I had it with some cold homemade lasagna and it was divine. But that might have just been the lasagna. Homemade lasagna goes with everything. Even self-loathing.
Overall: The lower ABV is a huge hit with me, as I am quite the lightweight. Tastes like a stronger IPA without a strong punch to it.
