I’ve had my fair share of 5 Paddles Brewing Co at finer festivals and beer bars around the city. Home Sweet Home is the first option I’ve spotted in the LCBO, and I noticed that we have not reviewed them yet.
Hailing from Whitby, ON, a 650 ml bottle of Home Sweet Home weighs in at 5.5% ABV and retails for $6 at the LCBO. 5 Paddles gets major bonus points for printing a best before date on the side of the bottle (January 31, 2017) so you know your beer is within its peak. I have a habit of buying more than I realize and forgetting things at the back of my fridge for months on end, until I go looking for horseradish and find a beer instead. This one is brewed with vanilla beans, which don’t really shine through.
Appearance: Copper colour. 1 glass had lasting off white head, one faded immediately. Both glasses were identical in shape and both were clean so it made no sense.
Aroma: Malt forward with strong honey notes. Reminiscent of a honey lager, or honey cake.
Taste: Cloyingly sweet on the palate, syrupy and confected feeling on the palate.
Aftertaste: Vanilla shines through on the aftertaste.
Food pairing: I’m at a loss for this one. I think the sweetness would work well with some Sichuan food to curb the spiciness?
Overall: Not my favourite brew by these guys. I’ll have to review something else to balance this one.
