I’ve had a fair amount of Bobcaygeon Brewing Company‘s Common Loon APA on tap at The Jester on Yonge, my local “I’m not really going out but I don’t want to drink beer at home” bar. We jumped at the opportunity to sample their first seasonal brew, Porter After 9. But we had some skepticism – it was a porter released in the spring.
The nice people over at Bobcaygeon sent us a complimentary can of Bobcaygeon’s Porter After 9. Contract brewed out of Broadhead Brewing from Nepean, Bobcaygeon is only available on tap at this point. Weighing in at 5.5% ABV and a small 25 IBUs, this beer is more of a winter sipper than a refreshing summer option. I love porters, but they don’t sit well with me in the summer unless I’m sitting by a campfire – and then I need a hefty stout to feel happy.
Appearance: Brown like cola. Rapidly diminishing head.
Aroma: Cocoa and burnt toast, freshly brewed coffee.
Taste: Very light mouth feel, more toasty flavours on the back of the palate. Develops into a burnt flavour.
Aftertaste: Very dry and short finish. More burnt notes.
Overall: Will need to try it again on tap when the season changes to give it a proper go around.
