Finally! Spring has arrived!
The sun is out and beer sales are about to jump through the roof!
Spring is the time of the Bock, which is one of my all-time favourite beer styles. Bock’s are filled to the brim with flavour from caramel to cinnamon but because they are lagered (cold fermented using bottom fermenting yeast) they are crisp and light.
We’ve picked up a bunch of bocks to review on the blog and the first under our noses is Dog Stalker Bock by Grand River Brewing.
Dog Stalker is a seasonal beer that seems to show up on LCBO shelves every year. Sadly the beer is not listed on their website. Not sure why to be honest.
The only information the have on the bottle is the bottling date, which is good as a bock should most certainly be drunk fresh.
This beer sits at 6% ABV and a bottle is $3.95.
Appearance: A nice amber red colour. Filtered with about a finger of off-white head.
Aroma: Caramel and popcorn, hints of cherry and lots of fruitiness.
Taste: Not much like the smell at all. The malt is still there but not as fruity. There is a hint of the hops, but not enough to change the flavour much. You get a bit of vanilla at the back of the tongue. There is a lot of raisin in this after a few sips, ripe plumb as well. Beautiful toasted flavour.
Aftertaste: The sweet and bitter notes of the malt linger a bit.
Overall: A nice spring bock.
