We had the good fortune of seeing the Kids in the Hall recently at the Danforth Music Hall, and I lured Kole over to Allen’s afterwards with the promise of an amazing burger and extensive Scotch list. But I had my own agenda that didn’t include Scotch (this time). Allen’s has a VQA winelist that is 4 pages long, with options by the glass and by the bottle and handy descriptions of the overall harvest results year by year to help you choose. Nothing really says “Girl Drink Drunk” like a bit of rosé after the Kids in the Hall, and as an added bonus, Kevin McDonald, Dave Foley and Scott Thompson all found their way over to the bar post show.
I opted for a glass of Pinot Noir Rosé Cuvéee Andrée 2013 by Niagara’s Chateau des Charmes for $8.95, since I know I am fond of both pinot noir wines and most offerings from Chateau des Charmes. But I’m not a huge fan of rosé wines, since I prefer either a rich full bodied red wine or a crisp and fresh white wine. I’m never really sure what to make of a rosé. This vintage is no longer readily available at the LCBO, but the 2014 vintage sells for a very affordable $14.95. Perfect for the patio if you’re a lady who lunches. Serve chilled.
Appearance: Deep pink colour.
Aroma: Light cherry and orange zest aroma.
Taste: Dry and crisp on the palate, served nicely chilled. More cherry and orange notes, none of the peppery flavours usually found in a pinot noir grape. Refreshing option to relax after dinner, was not paired with food.
Aftertaste: Acidic aftertaste.
Overall: Would pair nicely with some red thai curry with coconut milk, nothing too spicy. Enjoy on the patio, cause summer is just around the corner.
